Bergamo is an Italian city in the Lombardy region, the administrative center of the province of the same name. Bergamo is a beautiful and cozy city located on the top of a hill, its architecture is very diverse and beautiful due to the influence of Venice: from the 15th to 18th century the settlement was under the rule of this republic. Administratively the city is divided into two districts – Bergamo Alta and Bergamo Basso, located opposite each other on the hills and divided by the fortress wall. At the very top of the hill is the Upper Town (Bergamo Alta). The lower city (Bergamo Bassa) has a more modern architectural appearance. Bergamo refers to those cities where the historical center with monuments of architecture was preserved. The most popular place among tourists is Piazza Vecchif. The architectural ensemble of the square recalls the Middle Ages, when the city was under the influence of the Venetian authorities. The Palace of Soviets (Palazzo della Ragione) changed its appearance several times – in 1520 the lower gallery and the main Hall with rafters (Sala Sapriate), decorated with frescoes, were rebuilt. Opposite is the New Palace with the rich library of Cardinal Angelo Mai, the center of the square is adorned with the fountain La Fontana Contarini. Nearby, in Piazza Del Duomo, is the beautiful Colleoni Chapel, made in the Lombard Renaissance style. The chapel is considered one of the greatest architectural masterpieces of the era. There is also a small octagonal Baptistery of the 14th century and the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Maggiore. Looking at the sights of Bergamo, be sure to visit the picture gallery Carrara, located in the Lower City. It houses one of the richest collections of masterpieces by Italian masters: paintings by Lombard, Bergam and Venetian schools, famous painters Basquenis, Canaletto, Lotto, Maroni and many others. To the gallery you can go down the cable car or walk on foot, enjoying a beautiful view of the Lombard plain and the churches of the Bergamo Basso district. Descending to Bergamo Basso and visiting the art gallery, go to the church of Santa Maria della Grazie (Santa Maria della Grazie), next to which is the Roman column, installed in the early 17th century. Nearby is Piazza Dante with the fountain of Neptune and the Palace of Justice. Music lovers are advised to visit the Opera Theater, built in the late 18th century and bearing the name of the famous Bergamite composer Gataano Donizetti. Every summer opera festivals are held here, collecting talented performers from all over the world under the roof of the theater. The botanical garden (Orto Botanico di Bergamo Lorenzo Rota) appeared in Citta Alt in 1972. It was named after the scientist Lorenzo Rota, who first classified the plants of Lombardy. Herbarium, which he collected over the years of his work, still exists. Unfortunately, only biologists can see it. There is a botanical garden on the hill of Scaletta di Colle Aperto, which offers a beautiful view of the lower town and surroundings. The garden area does not exceed 1,5 thousand m2, and on its territory grows nine hundred species of flora. In Bergamo, a huge number of cafes and restaurants, mainly specializing in national cuisine. We advise you to visit the restaurant Colleoni & dell’Angelo, which is perfectly suitable during the day for friendly meetings, and in the evening – for romantic ones. Italian cuisine can also be enjoyed in the small restaurant De Mimmo, offering a variety of options for pizza, pasta, seafood dishes and the best wines. To spend time with the whole family, the Tratoria Parietti restaurant is perfect. Here you will be pleased with reasonable prices and a varied menu, as well as a very cozy atmosphere and attentive service. If you went to Bergamo a big company, the best place for a party is the Gennaro & Pia restaurant, located near the city center. In addition to national Italian dishes, most cafes serve traditional Bergaman dishes: porridge of cornmeal with cheese and “casoncei” – fragrant ravioli with Bergamian meat.
