Sirmione is a city in the Italian region of Lombardy, in the province of Brescia. It occupies the peninsula, which extends from the south to Lake Garda on the border between Lombardy and Veneto (Verona province). Already in the time of the Roman Republic there was a resort. Many wealthy residents of Verona (not excluding the poet Catullus) had villas here. In the era of the dominant, the settlement was fortified in the event of an attack by the barbarians, but the fortifications did not save it from the capture by the Lombards, who, however, complimented this place with their favors. The widow of the King of Desideria, Anza, founded a monastery here. In the XIII century, the city was owned by Verona Scaligers, whose name is associated with the construction of an impressive castle. From 1405 to 1797 years. Sirmione was in the power of the Venetian Republic, and all this time the castle contained a Venetian garrison. In 1920 in Sirmione there was a meeting of James Joyce and Ezra Pound. In the city is located the country house of Maria Callas. In 1900, the thermal center was erected on this site, today the hot springs of Sirmione are fed by pools of two complexes (Catullo Spa, located in the heart of the ancient city, and the Virgillio Spa, which opened in 1987, specializing in the treatment of bronchopneumopathy), as well as the best Resort hotels in Sirmione Spa Hotels. Rest on Lake Garda has long been considered prestigious and respectable. The old town with its many restaurants, bars with live music, nightclubs and dancing evenings, a huge number of excursions to Verona, Padua, Milan, the famous lake water parks, where children and adults have enough fun for a whole vacation. Boating, surfing, water skiing, hiking and cycling in the mountains, rock climbing, golf, tennis and other equally fascinating sports activities to the services of holidaymakers in this protected corner of Italy. Sirmione is a popular resort town on Lake Garda, which is famous not so much for its beaches, as for the unique thermal springs and imposing fortress that hangs over the historical center of the city, giving it a fabulous view. It seems that just about from the stone walls the courageous guards will run out or coquettishly, shooting their eyes to the right and to the left; smiling milkwomen will appear – and only another flock of tourists with cameras appears. Sirmione became famous as a place of excellent rest for a long time already – since the time of the Roman Empire. It was then that the wealthy residents of Verona did not hesitate to buy here a villa and a couple of meters of land, so that there would be plenty of capricious wives and children to take to the air. By the resort itself, you can easily move on foot, however, a tourist mini-train operates on the very edge of the peninsula (1.5-2 km) especially for the elderly guests of the resort from the Skaliger Castle to the Catullo Terme. Sirmione is known for its thermal springs, in particular the sulfurous waters of Boiola, which are successfully used in the clinics Catullo and Virgilio for the treatment of rhinitis, acute respiratory and gynecological diseases. Some hotels on the lake have their own health centers and beauty centers where the guests are offered various programs for recovery and rejuvenation, anti-stress programs, weight loss courses, diet programs for body cleansing. Of course, the main attraction of the resort is the imposing 13th-century Skaliger castle on the shore, once serving as the military port of the Verona flotilla. Today inside the fortress there is a mini-museum, which offers a walk along the walls and climb to the observation tower, which offers an amazing view of the city and the lake. Sirmione’s heart is Corso Vittorio Emanuele Street and Carducci Square, which are pedestrianized. Here there is a mass of souvenir shops, shops, craft workshops and cafes. Noteworthy is the church of San Pietro in Mavino, built by the Lombards and then rebuilt in the 14th century. It is decorated with unique frescoes from the 12th to 16th centuries and is famous for its ancient Romanesque bell tower of the 11th century. Nearby is the church of Santa Maria Maggiore (circa 1400) with a complex of frescoes of the 15th century. You can get there by following Via Antiche Mura.
